Being Treated Differently At Work Now That You Came Out? How To Identify Discrimination In The Workplace

Law Blog

Hostility in the workplace can be detrimental to your emotional and psychological well-being. Unfortunately, when you're a member of the LGBTQ+ community, workplace hostility and discrimination is all too common. Workplace discrimination can come in a variety of forms. In fact, you might not even realize that you've been the victim of discrimination right away. Here are four signs that you've been the victim of workplace discrimination based on your sexual preference or gender identity. If any of these situations seem familiar, you need to contact an attorney right away.

You've Been Subjected to Off-Color Jokes

Workplace humor is one thing, but workplace humor that seeks to humiliate you is not acceptable. If you've been subjected to off-color jokes or sarcastic barbs relating to your sexual preference, you need to speak to an attorney. Workplace discrimination and harassment designed to attack your sexual preference is against the law.

You've Been Passed Over for Promotion

If you've been passed over for promotions, and you believe it is due to your sexual preference or gender identity, you're going to need legal representation. This is particularly true if you've been passed over for promotions only since openly identifying your sexual preference. Now's the time to start keeping a journal of all the people who are receiving promotions at work ahead of you. Pay close attention to people who receive promotions who are less qualified than you, or who have been with the company a shorter time than you. Those instances may prove that you've been discriminated against based on your sexual preference.

You've Been Ignored While at Work

If you've been made to feel invisible since coming out as LGBTQ+, you need to speak to an attorney. As stated earlier, discrimination can take many forms. In fact, discrimination can exist when you, or other workers, are ignored or treated differently from the rest of the employees. If you're being ignored at work, your employer could be trying to force you to quit by creating a hostile work environment for you. Now's the time to seek legal representation.

You're Not Invited to Activities

If you've noticed that you're not being invited to activities involving other employees and their families, this may be a form of discrimination. Make a note of each activity that you're not invited to, and include details about the employees who are included in the invitation. If it's only the same-sex couples that are being left out of the activities, you're going to need an attorney.

Legal Help: Hiring a Family Attorney

Several years ago. I found myself facing a suit as the result of a traffic accident. Fortunately, a friend knew a great car accident attorney who was willing to take my case. She represented me well and the suit was eventually dismissed. That woke me up to the fact I needed an attorney to call on for other matters. Fortunately, I found a family attorney who could help with everything from creating last wills and testaments to dealing with personal injury cases. Today, I feel prepared to take on any legal issue that could come along. The trick is to choose the right attorney. Keep reading and I'll share how I made decisions that are right for me. Hopefully those same ideas will help you find legal counsel that you can depend on.
